No-nos for small business websites

We all know a business website has basically become the key element that shows consumers what and who you are. It should be something that is professional, consistent with your business as well as able to create a positive first impression. How can all these be achieved, you may ask, the answer is the design. Here are some “do-nots” or rather “never-dos” for small business websites.

The top on my list item is the one that turns me off the most, which are websites who forces me to sign up. Where should I sign up with you when I don’t even know what is your business about? Whenever I enter into such a site, I will simply close the window. This applies to other consumers too. I have encountered with a few websites that forces me to sign up with my email address because they are going to spam my inbox with newsletters or sign up with Facebook because they are going to post on my behalf. The funny thing is they do the call-for-action not after letting you to browse the website, but right at the moment when you enter the site. If you don’t register, you will not be able to access it. This not only annoys consumers, but the business itself is turning consumers away. Why would you want to do that? So avoid it.

Ever surfed on your mobile or tablet and entered into a site which requires Flash but your device does not support it? Flash are not “friendly” on mobile and tablets, as it is demanding to load. So well designed websites nowadays avoid flash and replace flash with HTML 5 instead. We are living in a fast-pace world today, people are getting more and more inpatient when Internet speed gets faster and faster. If your website is taking too long to load, chances are I am going to find another website to replace you.

Is your website consistent and unified? Having a chaotic design is another big no-no. You don’t want a website that just looks like everything is being thrown together without a clear structure or concept. Usually our graphic and web designers will recommend maximum 3 fonts for a single small business website. As for colours, it is good to have a fixed colour scheme.
